DINOSAURS

Dinosaurs were a type of lizards. They lived from about 230 million to about 65 million years ago. In 1842, Sir Richard Owen created the word dinosaur. It came from Greek words deino.s, meaning “terrible” and sauros, meaning “lizard”. Dinosaurs lived on earth for about 140 million years.

During the dinosaurian era, the days were short. The sun was not as hot as it is today. On earth there was only one big continent and one big ocean. The name of the continent was pangea (all lands) and the name of the ocean was panthallassa (all seas).

There were many kinds of dinosaurs. Some of them were very big and some others were small. Some dinosaurs ate leaves and some others ate meat. Some dinosaurs could fly.

What happened to dinosaurs? Dinosaurs became extinct because there was a large comet hitting the earth. The comet caused fire and it killed the trees. Dinosaurs could not eat because there were no trees on earth and finally they died and became extinct.

The weather was very clear. I and my family decided to go camping last holiday. Father prepared the tent and other equipment. Mother prepared the cooking and eating utensils. I took my fishing rod and my brother brought his sport equipment. When everything was ready, we left for the camping site in countryside.

.  There were many campers when we arrived at the camping site. Unfortunately, the good location near the river had been occupied by other campers so we had to look for another place. Finally,, we found a good place little bit further. It was near the big tree. After setting up the tent, my father and I went fishing. We joined other people sitting on the rock near the river.

In the evening, father made a fire. Mother cooked the fish we caught. I could say that it was the best fish I had ever tasted.  Sleeping in the tent was a very wonderful experience. I woke up early in the morning. I felt fresh. Then I accompanied my brother playing ball.

SCOTLAND

A lot of people think that Scotland is a part of England but this is untrue. Scotland is, in fact, a part of Great Britain. It is governed from London but in many ways it is a separate nation. It has its own capital city, Edinburgh, its own laws and its own stamps. It even has its own language, Gaelic, spoken now by only a few people on the islands.

There are only about five million Scots, and most of them live in the southern half of country called ‘Lowlands’, where the major cities are situated.

But most holiday visitors to Scotland go to the Highlands because of the high mountains and deep valleys, clean rivers and cold ‘lochs’. The Highlands are home to many rare birds and animals, like the golden eagle and the wildcat, which are found nowhere else in Britain. It is a lonely, wild and empty land. Only two per cent of the British population live there and the population is getting smaller all the time. There is very little work so most of the young people who are born there have to move south to find a job. Perhaps the Highlands of Scotland will become the last great wilderness of Europe.

Little Brother, Little SisterMaltreated by their stepmother, who was a witch, a little brother and sister fled into the woods. After running for a while, the brother said: ‘I’m so thirsty. Let’s find a spring and have a drink.’

As the young boy bent down to drink, his sister heard a voice which said: ‘Who drinks from me will turn into a fawn.’ it was the witch! Too late, the sister tried to prevent her brother from drinking. The young boy changed at once into a fawn. In tears, the little girl made a lead and collar out of her belt, and led the fawn off into the woods. There they found an abandoned cottage and lived together, far from any danger.

One day, however, the king was hunting in the woods, and he spied the fawn, which could not resist the urge to wander away from the cottage. The king and his hunters chased the fawn all the way back home. There, the king followed it into the cottage, where he found a young girl stroking the frightened animal. She was so beautiful and gentle that the king fell in love with her at once. He asked her to be his wife, and his words caused the maiden to cry for joy. When one of her tears fell on the fawn, it changed back to her brother once more. After spending one night in Manado I headed off to Bunaken on

one of the public boats on Sunday. I had expected something like a

ferry but it was actually a wooden boat full of locals and a whole

lot of supplies heading to the Island.

On the trip over the place I met a French tourist who had been to the Island twice

before and said that he knew a nice place to stay and to do some

diving. We arrived at the Sea breeze dive centre and were immediately

greeted by a local who instantly picked me for an Australian.

We worked out. What I thought was a fair deal for room for four days with the diving equipment. Even with a fair price diving was one of the most expensive sports I have undertaken whilst on my travel. Definitely one of the most worthwhile though.

Bunaken was a small, quiet island which comprises of a local village and a row of a diving centre offering food, accommodation and diving packages. The place I stayed has a whole lot of bungalows and a restaurant, a common area on the water edge, which was a very nice place to enjoy dinner and a few drinks.

B.        The writer told about the local village and the food.

D.       Bunaken was a good place for diving.

26.      Based on the text we can conclude that …

A.    the writer took a ferry to go to Bunaken.

B.     diving was the cheapest sport to the writer.

C.     it was the second time for the writer to visit Bunaken.

There was a couple who lived on the foot of Mount Bromo, Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. After eight years of marriage, they had not had any children. For six years they prayed, appealing gods to give them children. Finally, their prayer was complied on one condition: they would have to sacrifice their youngest son to the Bromo crater.

After some time, Roro Anteng gave birth to a child. And it happened every year until they had 25 children. They lived happily and ignored the agreement. The Mount Bromo erupted signaling that the gods asked the couple to fulfill their promise. But they didn’t want to let their youngest son, Raden Kusuma, be sacrificed to the crater.

WHAT IS THUNDER?

Thunder sounds like an explosion. Lightning causes thunder. The sound comes from air that suddenly gets very hot.

A bolt of lightning can make the air around it as hot as 18,000° Fahrenheit (10,000° Celsius). That’s hotter than the surface of the Sun! The hot air rushes away from the lightning bolt. The air rushing away makes the loud sound of thunder.

You often hear the thunder after you see a bolt of lightning. This is because sound travels slower than light. The farther away the lightning is, the longer it takes for you to hear the thunder. You can tell how far away the lightning is. You can count the seconds between the lightning and the sound of the thunder it makes. Sound travels about 1 mile (about 1.6 kilometers) every 5 seconds. If you count slowly to 5 and hear thunder, the lightning bolt was about 1 mile away. If you count to 15 before you hear thunder, the lightning bolt was 3 miles away.

34.           Paragraph 2 of the text above tells you about … .

A.       the heat of the sun surface          C. how the thunder happens.

B.        the loud sound of  air                  D. the sun that shines the air.

A.           the light travels faster the sound.          C. the lightening is farther away.

B.            the thunder is very hot to feel.              D. the air rushes to heat the earth.

36.     How many miles away from you is the lightning bolt if you count the sound of thunder at 30 seconds?

A.       7                B. 6                 C. 5.                D.4

37.        The word “it” in the sentence “A bolt of lightning can make the air around it as hot as 18,000° Fahrenheit (10,000° Celsius.” refers to … .

I had never been camping before I met my best friend, Jacklyn. I didn’t know that camping meant sleeping out in nature, in a tent. I guess I didn’t really think about it at all.

We were off to a nearby campground. We drove in and paid for our site. It was beautiful. There were ducks and a small lake and up on the hill there was a pool and small store if you needed anything.

At dusk we lit our fire. It was very nice and pleasant. However I had a small allergy problem with mosquitoes. I hate bugs, and mosquitoes seem to be the worse, due to their stinging and being irritating. It was awful, but the camp fire was nice. Jacklyn told me about her camping stories. They were really interesting.

After a full night of stories and fire, we settled in out the tent. We slept in our sleeping bags on the ground. To my surprise, the ground was not wet, and we had a small air mattress under us. Of course, the mattress wasn’t as comfortable as mine at home but it was no problem. Then in the middle of the night I heard scuffling just out of our tent. I woke Jacklyn and I told her that there was a bear in our camp. She told me to just go back to sleep. I really didn’t know that there were bears in local camp grounds.

The next morning I woke to the same noises and found the culprit. It was ducks. I felt so stupid. To this day we still talked about my first camping trip.

It was a very memorable experience.

Scotland

A lot of people think that Scotland is a part of England but this is untrue. Scotland is, in fact, a part of Great Britain. It is governed from London but in many ways it is a separate nation. It has its own capital city, Edinburgh, its own laws and its own stamps. It even has its own language, Gaelic, spoken now by only a few people in the islands.

There are only about five million Scots, and most of them live in the southern half of the country called ‘Lowlands’, where the major cities are situated.

But most holiday visitors to Scotland go to the Highlands because of the high mountains and deep valleys, clean rivers and cold ‘lochs’. The Highlands are home to many rare birds and animals, like the golden eagle and the wildcat, which are found nowhere else in Britain. It is a  wild and empty land. Only two per cent of the British population live there and the population is getting smaller all the time. There is very little work so most of the young people who are born there have to move south to find a job. Perhaps the Highlands of Scotland will become the last great wilderness of Europe.

It was Sunday morning December 26th 2004. The day that I would never forget forever. We went to the beach in Meulaboh, Aceh. Many people were there when I arrived.

When we were enjoying the beautiful sunrise, suddenly we were shocked by a violent shake in the ground. Everybody in the beach was panic. We soon realized that it was a very big earthquake although it struck in a very short time.

After that, we saw the water was going on into the middle of the sea. No wonder if there were many kinds of fish were left behind on the sand. We all seemed to be astonished by the view until we realized that there was a huge wave came towards us and destroyed everything in its way.

Little Brother, Little SisterMaltreated by their stepmother, who was a witch, a little brother and sister fled into the woods. After running for a while,

the brother said: ‘I’m so thirsty. Let’s find a spring and have a drink.’

However, as the young boy bent down to drink, his sister heard a voice which said: ‘Who drinks from me will turn into a fawn.’ it was the witch!

Their goodness and love had overcome the witch’s evil spell, and they lived safely and happily with the king for ever after.
